300s, near race pace

Warm day at the Marist track, light winds, clear and about 80º early evening.  Today was a bit of a turning point as I put the Adidas trainers back on and ran close to 400m race pace.

Hoka trainers on

stretches, drills, bands, 100m

100m - 14.65

Adidas trainers on

300m - 44.75 (14.07, 14.71, 15.97)

300m - 43.50 (13.41, 14.50, 15.59)

300m - 42.79 (13.41, 13.81, 15.57)

It felt ok, no sign of injury.  Was careful on the first one then ramped it up.  Took ample rest, 12min after the first, 15min or so after the second.   Feel like I could probably break 60 sec in spikes for a 400m, but probably not much faster at this point.  Still not conditioned nor have the form and speed reserve to finish a 400m, noting how slow my last 100m splits were today.

Need to get back to the grindstone for more conditioning and then maybe in 7-10 days, put the spikes on and see where I am.  Still thinking about racing in 2 weeks.  It's a 2.5 hr drive to about a 10:30 am race so it wouldn't be easy.

Getting back to where I need to be.  139.5 lbs after workout.

  1. Sounds like you are getting close. Dug deep on Hard Guy. 2400’ climb in 6.2 miles, flowy single track with steep loose sections. 70 minutes to the turn around my best is 67 so for this time of the year that is good. Terrain variety requires digging really deep in some sections. Sometimes it’s kind of like acrobatics where due to loose trail, steepness and rocks come to a momentary stop with wheel turned all the way one direction and you have to exert maximum force on the pedal in the 12 o’clock position while pulling hard on the bars, engaging muscles you don’t normally use in the upper hip girdle, just to re establish momentum. If you don’t get it right you come off the bike. Easy to tweak something. You are rewarded with an absolutely amazing down hill. Check out this guys video much better than mine.

    1. Don't see how he keeps the cam so steady. Risky to do alone.

    2. His bike is probably a full XC bike with 150mm travel on his shocks and 66 degree head tube, great for downhills. Mine is configured for trail racing, steeper head tube, responsive, great climbing but not optimized for downhill. My shocks only have 100mm travel but are lighter. But still can rip it pretty good down that trail as it has a lot of non technical sections. My bike is out of date but was great in its day (2016) but will cost a small fortune (8000+) to replace. Might buy a new one as a retirement gift for myself. Actually pretty safe trail. No trees to run into. Having said that they did airlift someone out of there last weekend.
