2018 USATF Masters Indoor Championships - day 3

I've been a little slow to write this post as the Indoor Nationals did not end well for me, finishing 4th in the 200m final and reinjuring my foot, and as I had said in my previous post, totally squandering what should have been an easy win in the 400m.   I scratched from the 60m day two race.

I really have been thinking a lot today about this, maybe too much.   Sometimes I ask myself, like on those 95ยบ days in AL ... at some June association meet where I wait for hours to race, "how did I get myself into this?"

Satisfaction is hard to come by.  If I had won the 400m, I'd be ruminating about how slow my time was.   When I won the World 200m indoor last year, I was still kicking myself for losing the 400m.

Daegu was such a good meet, it reaffirmed my belief in myself that I could maintain my speed over the years.   But, as this season begins to look like a bust, I wonder if my best days are behind me.   I've had injuries before, so this isn't a new thing.  I lost the entire 2013 season to my broken metatarsal.

By any standard, it's been a good run since I won my first Nationals in '12.  Since then, I've raced 9 USATF National Championship 400m finals, won 5 Gold, 3 Silver.  Also, a World Gold, Silver, and two Bronze.  It's easy to get used to winning, not so much the opposite.

Observing some of the races at the Nationals, you could see how important it was to some.  I saw a guy dive for a Bronze medal in the 800m, fall and hit his head on the rail and finish 4th.  I saw Mark W. also dive at the end of a 800, clearly way in front, hoping to set a record.  I also saw Oscar, in severe pain with sciatica win the M65 200m in a time way below what he usually runs.  Duanne injured a groin and had to pull out of the 200m.

Some great performances, John won the M50 400m by a huge margin, running 55.1 on that slow track.  I estimate that would have been 53 mid-high outdoor in good conditions.  Teammate Bruce won the M55 800m, I think his first individual medal at Nationals.  Those 400/800 performances are very hard earned.  I feel really happy for those guys.   Also, Sonya set another American record in the W45 1500m, and Leslie set a World Record in the W60 800m 2:36.

Writing this on Tuesday, the foot is about the same as it was when I injured it 6 weeks ago in Atlanta.  Sore to walk on.   I was feeling ok after the first 2 races, only minor soreness but with the draw of lane 2, it just put too much stress on my foot and I felt a pull on the second turn.  I was supposed to race the 4x400m relay soon afterward, I told the team I would but to check with me afterward.  I saw John standing there right after and said, "I can't do it, I reinjured my foot."  The casualty to this injury was that the GPTC 4x4 M50 B team would not get to run.  The A team with John, Ray, Bruce, and Scott won by such a huge margin that they nearly lapped the field.  The B team would have easily taken 2nd.  I felt bad about this.  Daryl, Wally didn't get to run.

The 200m Final
In lane 2, I knew I'd need to make my move on the second turn if I were going to catch Rob.  My start was ok despite a flinch, and I kept even with Rob in lane 3 down the back stretch.   Don was leading by at least a few steps and I really put the hammer down on the second turn pulling even with Rob, and coming off the turn, I was in second place by half a step when I felt something in my foot.  It hurt with every step but I was able to finish the race in a poor 26.3, missing a Bronze by 0.14.  Rob pulled away from me down the final stretch and got silver in 25.8.  Coming off the turn, I had a step or 2 on Brian who got Bronze, but he got me in the last 10m by a foot.   Maybe I should have made my move a bit later, not putting so much pressure on my foot on the turn, whatever.  I lost.

The injury is not in the same part of my foot where it started, it's now on the outside of my foot.  If any indication of previous injury holds true, I may be able to start slow running in a week to 10 days.  We'll see.  The day it happened it felt bad enough to believe I might be out for the season.

Forward
Well, after my post race meal of sandwich and a large quantity of french fries (which I never usually eat) and a sedentary day of moping and eating bread... I'm happy that I'm still 146 lbs.   It shows the body can take a little abuse without gaining weight immediately.  What really sucks is that I'll likely miss the entire college season.  I doubt I'll be racing in Sewanee's home meet less than 4 weeks away.
What is embarrassing is my times.  People are who see this are going think, 'what happened to Yelverton'?   Some of the older wiser masters that punched their ticket to Landover, decided to come and not race because of injury or lack of fitness.  Lorraine, W55 AR holder in the 400m was a spectator, Robert T., said he wasn't fit and just ran the 4x200, Marcus came and competed although clearly not fit and taking the long view toward Spain.   Marcus was surprised to hear that I'm likely not considering going to Spain.  He was talking about going for an M55 world record in the 4x400, but I told him, we'd never get that record.  That record is by Collins, Allie, and company and we'd have to average 55 flat a leg.  No way.

I got a message from Jim saying, just wait and reevaluate, all is not lost.  I got a message from Alan who saw my times and said he knew something was wrong.  He also said he's been training on a Peloton bike and said if he we me, he wouldn't have gone to Nationals with this injury.  I really felt like I was almost over it.  He also suggested something I already knew: my training philosophy needs to change and encompass more quality work.  I can only do quality work like 50s and 150s when I'm 100% healthy.  He said I can still do weights, bike, pool and maybe try to aim for some meets in June.  I do need more lifting and strength work if I'm going to continue in this sport.   I've come to realize that without being an athlete with some goals, my life isn't as meaningful... so I'll endeavor to persevere.   It's great to have colleagues in this sport.

I returned my Brookstone foot massager and ordered a different one.  If I don't like it as much, I'll repurchase the Brookstone with a warranty.  Right now, my foot is too tender for massage, just doing the usual things, hot tub, Voltaren gel, self massage, and sling.

We'll see how it feels in a week.  In the meantime, I'll be back in the gym tonight for some weights and stretching, maybe some bike if I can tolerate it.  And, more coffee while I sit by the fire and wait for a possible late season snow tonight.   I'll keep on keeping on.

Here are some photos of the meet and friends.
