I've settled on a short simple interval set. I can be in and out of the pool in about 15 min, and I can do it everyday if I want. Using watch is inaccurate for HR but I'll post it anyway.
Pool laps 6x50yd w/ ~1:10 rest - 40.3, 45.9, 45.2, 46.3, 49.2, 50
Max HR - 154
HR avg - 128
HR< 128 - 5:09
HR 128-144 - 6:49
HR 145-152 - 1:15
Not exactly 'running the engine hot' like the anaerobic power of track sprinting... more like a zone 2-3 workout.
At least I'm not heavy - 141. 3 lbs after workout.
About undertaking this surgery, I'm thinking it's going to be a helluva miserable inconvenience. Crutches to early/mid March. With my time off and spring break, I'll only have to endure 3 weeks or so of crutches at work. I'm going to follow Dr. LaPrade's more conservative protocol of 6 weeks non-weight since it worked before. I asked Justin about it, he said I'm more than welcome to follow a more conservative protocol but he says 50% weight bearing ok. I asked him why, and he said, 'because my stitches are strong.' Not worried about the stitches breaking, but what they're holding. Curiously, his radial tear protocol is more like LaPrade's, 6 weeks, no weight. So, since I do have a radial tear, that's what I'll follow. LaPrade's decision to not treat this doesn't bode well for my chances for a complete fix. He saw the risk and chances of success, and at this stage of his career at age 67, didn't want to deal with it. Justin however, I feel is at the top of game, only 50, and willing to take on the tough cases.
You probably know this but for review and for your readers HR is a good indicator for intensity within a discipline but poor indicator of trying to compare disciplines. HR is really an indirect measure of intensity, gas exchange (O2, CO2,, etc) is much better and is why for VO2 max lab tests that is what is measured. Swimming HR will be as much as 10 percent lower (typically closer to 5 percent) for the same zone workout as running. There are several reasons for this, one is that gravity effect is minimized as the subject is horizontal, another is positional related blood pressure, another is the whole body nature - muscle contraction acting as a pump. So you will need to establish a new maximum heart rate in the pool after some period of swimming adaptation to more accurately define training zones.
ReplyDeleteJust ordered speedmax helium racing skis and carbonlite boots. In my sport you can buy speed, which of course everyone does so the main advantage is just more pure fun and joy. Every ski my data shows at least one section of 25+ MPH which is screaming fast on basically edge less skinny ski’s. 29th ski of the season will be today. https://fasterskier.com/2022/02/fischers-new-speedmax-proved-to-be-the-go-to-this-season/
ReplyDelete29th? You must never miss a weekend
DeleteTrue. Sat, Sun and taking one to two days off during the week. Just did 3 consecutive days, off today on tomorrow. I’m on track to ski 60 times, 10 to 12 miles per ski. Each ski has several near max HR associated with getting over a steep roller like a sprint or at the end of a long climb. Towards the end of the year I’ll make some more trips to Galena (above Sun Valley) and if conditions are fast I’ll go 18 miles or so. 3rd and final Hyaluronic shot in the knees Wednesday. Seems to be helping.
DeleteSeason also starts latest Thanksgiving, one year as early as Nov 11. Local mountain typically remains open to mid to late March, Galena grooms trails daily until mid to late April. So the long season and general awesome conditions make it easy to ski a lot if you’re willing and able. Spring skiing is sketchy. They groom in the evening while it is soft, it sets up (freezes) overnight, so it is super fast/icy/poor control when you start in the morning. Then it gets perfect for a little while but as the sun hits it can turn to mush with high friction, basically suction from the wet snow. I did a terrible face plant on a fast downhill going from shade to sun in April two years back. Mushy snow has terribly high suction, it was like someone grabbed my skis. Spring skiing can be a blast but definitely need to finish early.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the physical characteristics of elite skate skiers. The subject of this video is 5’8 and 1/2” 161 pounds. Even though VO2 max like a top 5K runner is an absolute prerequisite they carry a lot of muscle. The sport demands strength. https://youtu.be/CA85m2TZDgw?si=hSTZJLG-igbxKzG4
ReplyDeleteTrivia: A classical guitar student of 2 of my colleagues is the only person to have ever played in Carnegie Hall as a classical soloist AND also competed in the Olympics as an athlete (2018). He is in the all-time top 10 of Americans in the (long track) speed skating sprint event, 500m.
DeleteBeing a Winston-Salem native I suspected he had his roots in inline speed. Which he does. High Point NC is a powerhouse in-line indoor speed skating location- or at least it used to be when I was in the sport. A bunch of inliners switched to ice and pretty much took it over.
